Researchers Unlock New Methods to Control Ionization with Structured Light

A research team from the University of Ottawa has made a breakthrough in understanding ionization, the process by which atoms and molecules lose electrons and become charged particles. This fundamental discovery has implications for x-ray generation, plasma physics, and quantum technologies.

Atoms—the building blocks of matter—can become ionized in various natural and artificial environments, including lightning, plasma TVs, and the northern lights. Until now, scientists believed they had limited control over this process. However, a new study led by Professor Ravi Bhardwaj and PhD student Jean-Luc Begin, in collaboration with Professors Ebrahim Karimi, Paul Corkum, and Thomas Brabec, challenges this assumption by demonstrating how specially structured light beams can precisely control ionization.
Manipulating Electrons with Optical Vortex Beams

Ionization is crucial in strong field physics and attosecond science, where it describes how electrons break free from atomic bonds. Traditionally, researchers thought they could not manipulate this process beyond certain limits. This study, however, introduces a new technique using optical vortex beams—light waves that carry angular momentum—to precisely control how electrons are ejected from atoms.

"We have demonstrated that by using optical vortex beams, we can precisely control the ionization process," explains Professor Bhardwaj. "This discovery opens up new possibilities for advanced imaging techniques and particle acceleration."
Key Findings and Potential Applications

The research, conducted over two years at uOttawa’s Advanced Research Complex, found that the handedness and properties of the vortex beams significantly affect ionization rates. By fine-tuning the position of a "null intensity region" within the beam, they introduced a novel concept called optical dichroism, which allows selective ionization of specific atomic structures.
