PS5 emulation has been going through major breakthroughs during the past few weeks

Post by Mr.T »

Sony’s move away from physical PlayStation media is giving PS5 emulation a new kind of urgency

Sony has confirmed that it will discontinue physical disc production for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, with future releases moving to digital formats only. Sony says this is a response to changing consumer preferences, but it also highlights a larger issue: the more the industry shifts toward digital-only distribution, the more important emulation and preservation become for players who want long-term access to their games.

That is why the current wave of PS5 emulation development has attracted so much attention. Reporting from July 2026 says the scene, which had been mostly quiet for years, has suddenly picked up speed after Sony’s physical-media announcement, with projects now booting recent PS5 titles instead of just sitting dormant.

The important thing to understand is that PS5 emulation is still early and incomplete. Even the project maintainers describe SharpEmu as an experimental emulator focused on accuracy and infrastructure rather than game-by-game compatibility, and KytyPS5 says it is still in an early stage with limited compatibility and expected glitches or crashes.

At the same time, the progress is real. KytyPS5 now says it can boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games, including titles built with Unreal Engine 4/5, Unity, and custom engines. SharpEmu’s project page also shows that it is already aimed at PS5-specific research rather than a theoretical proof of concept.

Recent reporting has gone even further, describing PS5 games reaching boot screens, menu screens, and in some cases in-game sequences across different projects. That does not mean PS5 emulation is ready for mass use, but it does show that the gap between “impossible” and “possible” is closing faster than many people expected.

And that is the part Sony’s digital-first future keeps underlining. When physical media disappears, preservation stops being a niche hobby and becomes a necessity. If a game is only available through a platform holder’s store and license terms, then emulation becomes one of the few ways to keep older software usable after storefronts change, accounts get locked, or hardware support moves on.

So while PS5 emulation is still young, the momentum matters. Sony’s announcement did not create emulation, but it did sharpen the argument for it. The more the industry leans on digital-only distribution, the more obvious it becomes that preservation, archival access, and consumer ownership are not optional extras. They are the only way to make sure today’s games are still playable tomorrow.
