Gambling companies take Meta to court over ads for illegal gambling sites
Licensed gambling companies in the Netherlands are taking legal action to force Meta to crack down harder on illegal gambling sites. They are also filing a complaint with the European Commission, alleging it is doing too little to enforce online gambling regulations.

*De Telegraaf* reported this news this morning. Illegal gambling sites pose formidable competition to licensed operators. According to VNLOK, the trade association for licensed gambling companies, over 70,000 gambling advertisements appeared on Meta platforms—such as Facebook and Instagram—during the final quarter of 2025. More than 95 percent of these ads reportedly originated from illegal operators.

Meta only removes ads for illegal gambling sites after they have been reported—meaning action is taken only after the fact. VNLOK describes this approach as "mopping while the tap is running" (an exercise in futility).

In a statement to the NOS, Meta acknowledged that it is unable to block all illegal gambling advertisements. The company stated that it is exploring improvements to prevent such ads from appearing on Facebook and Instagram.

Elusive opponent
The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) oversees the country's gambling market. "We see thousands of ads from illegal gambling sites on Meta every month and report them," a spokesperson said. "On average, these ads remain visible for about a day and a half. Once removed, they reappear under a slightly different name or web address. We are dealing with an elusive opponent."

Licensed gambling companies want Meta to do more to block advertisements from illegal competitors. Meta would be required to do so under the Digital Services Act (DSA), the EU legislation applicable to all online companies operating in the European Union.
