Sam Altman Thinks It’s “Quite Terrible” That Normal People Have RAM in Their PCs

Fresh off the Cheeky Pint podcast (with Stripe’s John Collison), OpenAI CEO Sam Altman decided to share his thoughts on the ongoing global DRAM shortage.

The quote that’s circulating:

“From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used maybe 5% of the time. Like, you want maximum utilization in the cloud if you’re trying to deal with this very supply constrained environment. And somehow many people’s intuition is the opposite of that.”

Context was local AI inference — people wanting to run open-source models on their own hardware instead of relying entirely on cloud data centers. Altman’s position is basically that idle (or lightly used) RAM in consumer PCs is a waste of scarce resources that would be better kept busy 24/7 in AI data centers. A scarcity that him and his cronies have artificially created.

Reactions online have been about as subtle as you’d expect: “He can pry it from my cold dead hands,” “All the RAM should belong to me so I can rent it back to you,” etc.
