According to a report by GameReactor, Steam is adapting its library in response to new guidelines from Germany’s regulatory board, the BZKJ. This update requires all games listed on Steam in Germany to have an official age rating to comply with the country’s legal standards. Consequently, Steam will begin delisting any unrated games from its German storefront by November 15, 2024. Developers can fulfill this requirement either through Steam’s internal rating system or by obtaining a rating from Germany’s USK agency.

This policy shift will impact a broad range of games on Steam, compelling developers to meet local regulatory demands. Age ratings have been a long-standing issue in the gaming industry, with agencies like the ESRB established to regulate game sales and protect different age groups. Various systems have been tried over the years, and even facial age verification has been suggested as a solution for rating enforcement.

The move comes at a time when Valve is expanding its reach beyond the online marketplace. Recent ventures like the Steam Deck have become a hit in the handheld gaming market, while Valve’s work in VR technology has resulted in releases like Half-Life Alyx.
